Questions and Answers
Questions: I heard that this has already happened and there's nothing we can do?
Answer. The zoning on more than half the property must be changed by the joint planning commission. This will be done but residents can petition for a referendum.
Question: I heard this is going to bring jobs to the area, isn't that good?
Answer. Of course jobs are good! But we need to decide what tops of jobs will benefit the community and what tops of manufacturing will necessitate bringing people to the community. As we've all observed across Michigan, there are help wanted signs all over Michigan in every sector of the economy. Marshall needs employed residents and we have those!
Question: Local contractors will probably be hired to build the facility.
Answer: Don't count on this. All the environmental testing of property was done by the Kansas City based company, Burns and McDonnel. When asked why an out of state contractor was used for this work, MAEDA was unable to provide an answer. If you visit the Burns and McDonnel website, you will find they have provided a reference page for community development agencies like MAEDA, giving instructions on how to get governmental grants to of course HIRE THEM.
Question: I live in Marshall. Who will provide water and infrastructure for the Megasite?
Question: I'm worried about the affects of global warming and the environment. Will this megasite contribute to this problem?
Answer. Yes. We all see what is happening to other places around the United States and the World. Food scarcity is a real concern. Loss of natural habitat and plant and animal diversity is a real problem. Instead of taking farmland out of production, we should be preserving it. Instead of destroying a natural space along 2 miles of the Kalamazoo River, we should preserve it. Creating a Recreational Area of the Megasite, providing for natural spaces and a combination of small community gardens and nature trails would benefit residents of Marshall and the environment. There are landowners within the Megasite, that don't want to sell, or don't want land to be sold for industrial purposes, but would be favorable to the establishment of the Kalamazoo River Recreational Area.

Mason is the county seat of Ingham County. The population is roughly 8,252 . Maybe Mason should be the site of the next MegaSite!!
"Mason Megasite" |
Question: Would MAEDA be supporting this if it wasn't in the best interest of the community?
Answer. Well, The Marshall Economic Development Alliance is has been headed up by James Durian since 2020. James is a resident of Mason Michigan, located 48 miles away from Marshall. He can retreat to his small town after work, Marshall residents won't be able to. In addition, there is an employee of MAEDA, Rich Lindsey, who is responsible for getting people to sign these options with the state. Landowners must also sign a nondisclosure agreement. Rich also sits on the Marshall Township Planning Commission which votes on the township Master Plan. This is a direct conflict of Interest. There is no transparency in this process and it is ripe for abuse. |
What is the "Marshall megasite"? AKA "Michigan Megasite"?
The State of Michigan, working through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance (MAEDA), seeks to destroy 1,600 acres of prime agricultural land and natural area along two miles of the Kalamazoo River, in order to create an industrial "Megasite" for large scale manufacturing plants. The state hopes to attract 5,500 NEW residents to this area to be employed in these facilities. The proposed site will dwarf historic Marshall , Michigan. (population 7,088). This industrial site will forever change the fabric of this rural small town.
